A Visit to "Mayberry" (Mount Airy) - Andy Griffith's Hometown!

Just about an hour drive north of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is a little town called Mount Airy. Andy Griffith was born here and Mayberry was based on this town in his television series, "The Andy Griffith Show."  As a family, we have enjoyed watching DVD episodes of this classic show so we were really excited to visit the town and the Andy Griffith museum!

Alan doing his best Barney Fife expression...

Then, it was Micah and Nate's turn at Andy and Barney...

After our visit to the museum, we walked around downtown for the afternoon. There are all kinds of shops and restaurants that make you feel like you are actually stepping back in time into Mayberry!

We stopped by for a treat at the Walker's Soda Fountain, where Andy used to come with his friends after school for some ice cream! The owners here told us all kinds of stories about Andy, the town, and many of the actors from the show who were based on the lives of real people who lived there years ago!

We found some old replica trucks and the courthouse...

We also drove by the house where Andy lived until he graduated from high school.  The home is actually available to rent for anyone visiting in the area!

After our tour of Mount Airy, we drove up to Pilot Mountain. For those of you who are Andy Griffith fans, this is the mountain that Andy mentions in the show!  We drove to the top of the mountain and then hiked up a short trail to see this amazing view...

OK- so how many of you reading this blog post really want to just start whistling right now??? ;)

Go ahead and have some fun... just whistle away :o

Blessings to you and yours,

Jill and the boys:)
